Local, Polylocal, - Keynote Address by Michael Schwab

23 March 2026

We are happy to share Michael Schwab's keynote essay "Local, Polylocal" from the recent Artistic Intelligence General Meeting in Pontevedra. In it, Schwab attempts to think through what artistic research can offer at this particular moment in AI and knowledge infrastructure.

The essay argues for a shift: away from knowledge as something extracted and universalised, toward what I call polylocality — a condition in which contexts don't simply contain knowledge but actively constitute it. Artistic research, Schwab suggests, has been doing this all along, and now we need the conceptual and infrastructural language to say so.

The essay moves through exposition, articulation, scale, and context density to arrive at a question about provision. We are challenged to build the platforms through which radically different forms of knowledge can remain in consultation without being flattened into equivalence.

For those working at the intersection of research, art, and digital infrastructure, I hope this opens something useful.
